Adult Acne
Often pimples and other blemishes are considered to be a normal part of the maturation process, however adult acne that continues on beyond the teen years can be very problematic. Adult acne may be severe, moderate or even mild, but it is almost always embarrassing. Often people mistakenly believe that adult acne is caused by poor hygiene and eating habits, when in reality there are many factors that can cause the condition.
It is estimated that approximately half of all adult women and a quarter of all adult men suffer from acne in their adult years. Women often become more prone to adult acne due to the hormones found in birth control pills, the pore-clogging results of wearing certain types of makeup, plus genetic factors and stress. Men suffering from adult acne may also have hormonal imbalances or may also have genetic conditions or side effects from taking certain types of medications.

Using Benzoyl Peroxide
One of the most effective methods of treating adult acne is to use a daily cleaning routine that includes the use of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide solution as a wipe or antibacterial treatment after washing with a gentle, soap-free cleanse. A good quality oil-free moisturizer will keep the skin properly hydrated and supple to prevent as much scarring or pigmentation damage as possible.
Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial agent that kills the Propionibacterium acnes (P. Acnes), which is the bacteria that grows within the plugged follicles to cause the inflammation and swelling associated with all types of acne. By removing the bacteria from the skin area and regularly using a good exfoliating scrub to remove dead skin cells, acne breakouts will be more manageable.
Benzoyl peroxide should be used two to three times per day and can be applied to the skin’s surface using a cotton ball or a cotton pad. Simply moisten the cotton with the 2.5% benzoyl solution and gently wipe across the entire skin surface. Allow to dry for a few seconds and then apply a good quality oil-free moisturizer. This will prevent any flaking or drying and keep your skin looking great.
Hormonal issues
Good routines and proper cleaning are important, although, if the adult acne is caused by hormonal imbalances, the only treatment is medication. Talk to your doctor or ask to be referred to a dermatologist to determine if the adult acne is hormonally caused. For women, changing brands or types of birth control, especially the injections of birth control hormones, can be very effective in controlling future outbreaks. Only your dermatologist and doctor can help determine the hormonal or medical issues that are causing adult acne. If you are currently using prescription or over-the-counter acne medications or topical creams, be sure to consult with your doctor before adding any new treatments, as there can be complications. Adult acne can be treated with the proper combinations of medications and cleaning regimes.
