Acne Creams

Acne creams are used to treat existing breakouts and acne, and are sometimes marketed under the terms blemish crèmes, spot acne treatments or vanishing creams. The benefit of using acne creams is that it applies concentrated antibacterial and cleansing medications directly to the source of the outbreak, rather than treating all the skin. Since some acne creams tend to be very drying to the skin, this eliminates the flaky appearance that can occur if acne creams are applied to the whole face.

Most acne creams contain benzoyl peroxide, which acts to decrease infection, clear the clogged pores, and reduce redness and swelling. Some of the creams, especially those containing high percentages of benzoyl peroxide, can be problematic for sensitive skin types, so use on a very small area to prevent sensitivity issues. Intense itching sensations, dry flaky skin and even somewhat painful areas can develop if the skin is sensitive to benzoyl peroxide. Discontinue use if this occurs and try to find an acne cream that has a less concentrated amount of the chemical.

Other ingredients in acne creams may be herbal or medical. One of the most common ingredients found in acne creams is tea tree oil used as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial component. The tea tree oil is usually very helpful with sensitive skin and keeps the area hydrated and supple to aid in healing. Tea tree oil is also effective in eliminating the redness and swelling often associated with either whiteheads or blackheads.

Some of the herbal or natural acne creams rely on various fruit acids or herbal combinations to provide antibacterial as well as anti-inflammatory treatment for the skin. Fruit acids are made from ground-up fruit that is concentrated and then the various compounds are extracted from the concentrated product. Phytonutrients are compounds derived from plant extracts including the leaves, shoots, roots or bark. Some of these compounds have been used for centuries in the treatment of both infections and inflammations and are still used today. Many plants, such as aloe vera, cloves, black pepper, oregano, thyme, lavender and geranium, are all known antibacterial plants, however it is not the plant itself but rather the essential oils derived from the plant that have the antibacterial effect.

Caution is always advised when using either medicated or herbal acne creams, especially if you are using other creams, medications or products of any type. Be sure to check with your physician and discontinue use if you notice any signs of increased irritation. Acne creams are a great supplement to a good hygiene and diet routine and can be very helpful in both treating outbreaks and preventing further acne problems.
