Acne Diet
There is no question that diet can affect acne, although simply changing diet alone can rarely prevent all further outbreaks. A good, healthy diet rich in natural foods, whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables will help all aspects of healing, tissue repair, and the body's ability to fight infections.

To understand the best possible acne diet, it is important to add some foods to the diet and eliminate others. The following are foods that should be eliminated or greatly reduced from the diet:
- Foods high in processed and refined sugars. This includes sodas, cakes, candy bars, chocolate, fruit juices and sugar added to foods or beverages. The sugar affects the glucose levels in the body and can lead to hormonal changes and imbalances that cause excessive sebum production in the skin.
- All trans and hydrogenated fats. This may include processed white breads, cakes, cookies and other commercially-made products. Deep fried foods are also included in this group. The trans and hydrogenated fats themselves do not cause acne; rather they prevent the body from absorbing the good Omega 3 fats that help the body clean free radicals and toxins from the system.
- Reduce the amount of nuts or nut products that are consumed, and avoid peanut oils. Walnut oil or walnuts are beneficial but only in small quantities. Peanut butter is very high in both sugar and hydrogenated oils and can cause food allergies that, in their mildest form, may resemble acne breakouts.
- Reduce the number of milk and dairy products consumed daily or try to consume organic milk or dairy products. Commercial milk may contain high levels of hormones used to promote growth and milk production and can further cause hormonal imbalances throughout the whole system.
In addition to reducing or eliminating the above mentioned foods from the diet, it is also important to increase the consumption of other foods. Try eating most of your daily food intake from the following:
- Fresh fruits and vegetables, as many as possible. Try new types of fruits and vegetables to add variety to your diet. If you wish to cook the vegetables use a quick steaming method rather than boiling to keep as many vitamins and minerals as possible in the vegetable.
- Fish such as sardines, salmon, tuna and halibut at least twice per week. If you do not eat fish, consider taking a high quality fish oil supplement in capsule form. The most important ingredient in fish is Omega 3, and this can also be obtained from flaxseed and avocados, other great sources of this important oil.
- Take a multivitamin every day to ensure you are getting all the required minerals, vitamins and other dietary necessities. Ask your doctor to recommend a brand so that you get one that allows the supplements in the vitamin to be absorbed by your body.
- Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water a day. This helps your kidneys filter toxins and other impurities out of the body to assist your immune system in fighting infection.
Try to eat lean meats and avoid overly processed foods. Whole grains and organic foods should be consumed whenever possible. Following an acne diet is easy once you learn what to avoid and what to add to your daily consumption.
