Laser Acne Treatment

Laser acne treatment has only recently become an option for people that wish to get rid of the scars and blemishes caused by the condition. Laser acne treatments are simple and can be used to target several issues in the skin that can lead to acne formation and problems. Targeting Bacteria

One specialized type of laser acne treatment actually targets the bacteria, P. Acnes, that causes the inflammation, swelling, pain and redness that is caused by acne outbreaks. The wavelengths that are directed at the skin kill both bacteria on the surface as well as bacteria under the skin. This style of laser treatment usually lasts about six to eight months before the treatment needs to be repeated. Cleaning the skin with benzoyl peroxide between treatments can help to extend the length of the effects of the treatment.

Shrinking Sebaceous Glands

A second form of laser treatment works to actually penetrate the skin’s surface and decrease the size of the oil producing glands found in the skin. When the sebaceous glands are smaller, they are less likely to become overactive and product the large quantities of oil that cause additional problems for people with acne.

Most doctors that use laser acne treatments will combine both forms of laser treatments. These treatments are done within an office, and require no special preparation or any kind of surgical procedures. Clients simply relax, close their eyes, and the doctor or technician directs the laser over the skin areas that are to be treated. Most treatments will require a series of visits initially, usually once a month, for a period of six to eight months. Usually the treatments will need to be repeated on an infrequent basis even after the initial series is completed.

The treatments often have mild to moderate pain associated with the process. Many patients report a feeling like a pricking or tingling sensation while others report the sensation as more like being snapped with a rubber band repeatedly. In some conditions a cream can be applied to the skin’s surface that will slightly deaden the skin and eliminate the pain of the laser acne treatment. For most people the pain will not be an issue, and the sensation usually ends shortly after the treatment is completed.

Laser acne treatments are a great option for people of all ages. Since not all states regulate who can or cannot provide laser treatments, be sure to find out the qualifications of the individual that is providing the service. Most dermatologists will be qualified to do laser treatments, however some of the spas or beauty salons may also offer laser acne treatments and they may not have any specific training on using the equipment.
