Acne Scar Removal

Acne scar removal is often a priority as the scars are very noticeable and are a constant reminder of skin problems during teenage or adult years. Many people that have control of their acne wish to get rid of the pit-like scars that are left. There are several different processes that can be done to smooth the skin of the face, neck, back, chest or shoulders. The various procedures are individualized based on the age of the individual, the actual amount of scarring and the type of skin and sensitivity to different medications and treatments. A dermatologist can explain each procedure and evaluate your skin type to help you decide which one is most appropriate for your needs.

The general acne scar removal methods include:

  • Autologous fat transfer is the process by which fat cells are taken from other parts of the body and injected into the site of the acne scarring. This works to inflate the dent created by the scar tissue and give the skin a smooth appearance. Depending on the depth of the scar, the process may need to be repeated as the body naturally absorbs some of the transplanted fat cells.
  • Dermabrasion is the process by which the top layer of skin is removed or abraded through the use of a rough material. The skin then heals and a new, smoother surface is left. Dermabrasion works well for minor scarring or texturing of the skin but can be somewhat painful for some sensitive individuals. Deep scarring requires many dermabrasion treatments over long periods of time.
  • Chemical peels work similar to a dermabrasion process except they use the reaction of a chemical to remove the top layer of skin. Chemical peels are very effective for skin discolorations and minor scarring due to acne. They are not effective when used alone for deep scarring or changes in the texture of the skin.
  • Collagen injections are often used in severe scarring. The injections are applied to the skin underneath the scar, plumping it and making the surface appear smoother. Collagen injections must be used carefully as there are some issues with the collagen building up in one area of the skin causing bumps.
  • Laser resurfacing is used for very minor scars and lines. The surface of the skin is burned away by the laser leaving new and smoother skin. The process is not usually painful unless the individual is very sensitive.
  • Punch graphs are used with very severe scarring. The scar is removed from the facial area and a plug of grafted skin, usually from the back of the earlobe, is transferred to the site. The skin then heals and replaces the scar tissue.

Generally most procedures will take more than one treatment to complete the desired results, especially if the scarring is deep or covers a large amount of the surface of the skin. There are many options for acne scar removal and discussing options with your dermatologist will help you choose the one that is best for you.
